Yoga opens us to become self-aware and let us begin to understand
our deeper selves so we can understand life and others better. As
we turn our focus inward, introspectively and create stillness in
our lives we find that we are in touch with our heart, the seat of
our soul, where our knowledge resides. It allows us to develop
deeper awareness to deepen our lives and create a space for
compassion and love. It gives us the strength as well as the
ability to listen and be in harmony with our inner knowledge and
truth. Yoga will liberate us from the conditioned life as we know
it.
By withdrawing our awareness from
negative impressions, pratyahara strengthens the mind’s
powers. Pranayama (focused breathing) is one of the most common
practices for Pratyahara. While doing pranayama, the
person withdraws from the external on its own, and brings his focus
inwards towards
his
breath.
Pratyahara is a deep inward
focus, rooted in the sensations of the breath and the body. As we
bring our awareness inside the body, we can feel things that lie
under the surface of ordinary awareness. When holding a yoga
posture, keep the mind focused on where you feel sensations.
Explore where
the
sensations start, stop, and travel to, paying attention to any
emotional feelings in the physical sensations. When emotional
feelings emerge from the physical sensations keep your focus on
them to encourage these feelings to be drawn out and
released.
